Day 1: South Hobart to Triabunna - 90.7km
Day 1: South Hobart to Triabunna - 90.7km
Saturday 18th December 2021
The morning started with me getting the last of my stuff together, hanging out with my good friends, Kirra Lea and Tony (who were awesome for letting me stay at their place last night) and precaution (my favourite pastime). Kirra did take a picture with stood next to my hire bike and the first two of the bike pendants she had made for Walk for Wiggly Eyes (check out them out here, and you can get your own, and you'll be helping with the fundraising at the same time). These two were pretty special, the copper pin is actually for my Nan, and the silver pendant is for my Mum. So they will be there with you in England soon. And I do have to say (obviously with nooooo bias what so ever) they do look really awesome!
Anyway, the bike ride. I think today's ride can be split into 3 parts.
The first part was the mission of trying to get out of Hobart. As soon as I started, I was ready to get out of Hobart as quickly as possible. There is nothing wrong with Hobart, but it's a city, and cities are never the funniest of places to ride a bike around. Plus Google Maps kept taking me on the main freeway to get out of the city, which wouldn't have been the smartest idea (even though I kept telling it that I was on a bike). I found alternative and much safer routes to the bridges out of town and freeeeeedooommmm!
By the time I entered, what I am calling the "second third" of today's ride, the winds had kicked in and the uphills had begun. I think I'm not used to this bike just yet and therefore my stance/positioning, and I'm definitely not used to the extra weight at the back that the panniers give. The hills weren't all that steep, but it was a bit of hard work today. Well, I have over two weeks to get used to it.
And the third part of my ride, was mostly downhill! Now that was obviously good fun for me. Some of the ride took me alongside Prosser River. I dunno what it is, but being alongside a body of water just makes things better.
I arrived at my hotel, Spring Bay Hotel in Triabunna! And was greeted by extremely friendly and helpful stuff. And a massive thank you to Liza and the hotel for covering the costs of my room for the next 2 nights that I am staying, and the delicious dinner that I ate earlier this evening. It was really nice getting to my location in the early evening today, very different to a lot of my late night/early morning hut arrivals on my NZ hike 2 years ago.
After my shower and feed I walked down to the harbour to see the sunset over the bay and behind the mountains, before heading back to the hotel, only to see a huge full moon rise on my walk back.
And don't forget, it's not too late to donate here.
